Holly & Rex on the Great Loop

Ship’s Log 03092025

Day two in Fernandina starts with a flood warning. How does that work on a boat? At least the rain will make the boat cleaning easier.

Walked around Fernandina, past the burger joint in the old Gulf Oil gas station that we eat at in the 80’s. Stop in a few shops to look around, neither of us are shoppers.

We fixed the locked burner on the stove. Called customer service on a Sunday, agent answered and told us to hold on a minute to get his wife on the phone, she was giving the kids a bath. He said she knew more than he did, about locking up the burner, which it turns out is from cleaning the stove wiping the wrong direction. Great customer service would highly recommend that company.

Cooked on the grill in the rain, maybe it will stop tomorrow.

    John and Holly,

I’m jealous a bit of your journey, especially when you tie up at places I love. Fernandina is one of them. Funky history with pulp mills, etc., but that’s in the past.

There is a great bookstore there with a very good collection of Florida centric material. Check it out. I remember being there maybe 25 plus years ago, and buying a book called, as I recall, American Beach. A fascinating history of the beach in Jim Crow. Check this out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Beach,_Florida

Dede and I worked on the bow rail last weekend. It got bent in the hurricanes, and I just noticed it a couple of weeks ago. We only broke partially one weld, but it looks better.

How long will you be hanging in the Fernandia/Jax area? Any points further south? Now that I have the new Corvette we can be there in two hours and stay in a Days Inn (just kidding, Dede has a 700 thread count threshold).

    Johnny (and Dede)

    Sincerely,

    Dede Curran

    John and Holly,

If you go through Beaufort SC or anywhere near there, contact my dear friend Paul Sommerville. https://yourislandnews.com/paul-sommerville-describes-his-life-dedicated-to-service/ He and I were at Duke together and sold encyclopedias and vacuum cleaners door to door in Roanoke one memorable summer of 1964.

    Johnny and Paul,

I’d like to make an email introduction.

Johnny, Paul is a friend from Duke days and thereafter. We lost contact for a few decades, but re-connected and won’t make the mistake again. Paul is from Beaufort. He’s a labor negotiator by profession as well as a county commissioner for years. https://yourislandnews.com/paul-sommerville-describes-his-life-dedicated-to-service/

Paul, Johnny Curran is Dede’s brother. He’s a non-boring CPA who became a CFO and a serial entrepreneur. https://rangerdistribution.com/ He and his wife Holly are on a boating adventure that will be a part of a Great Loop experience if all goes well. They are headed north from Fernandina Beach and will be in your neck of the waterway at some time.

You have each other’s email. As far as cell numbers go, Paul’s is 843-255-9543 and John’s is 352-804-9059.

Paul is sometimes referred to as Dr. Paul Sommerville, but we can’t quite figure out where he got/bought that title. But you don’t have to call him Dr. Sommerville and he doesn’t have to call you CPA Curran.

Cheers, and hope you can connect.

    Johnny

    Johnny,

    Here’s the contact
