Leisurely morning leaving the dock at 7:30 heading for the Gulf fuel dock thinking it didn’t open until 8:00, turns out that it opens at 7:00 and we could have left early. Another long day planned, need to get to the marina so we can make our flights on Saturday to Elkhart.
Headed up the ICW, what the older guy at the gas dock called the “The Ditch” nice calm ride. Entered the Nuese River and all hell broke loose. We headed east on the river with three other boats, they must have slowed down or turned back because all of a sudden we were all alone and the seas were increasing, I ponder what do they know that I don’t. We drove the boat into the waves working the throttle up and then down as needed. One of the boats that was in Morehead City with us “Soggy Dog” passes us after after we been in the shit for a hour and half, both of us looked at each other and said no more trawlers! We were rolling all over and his v-haul was cutting straight through the waves.
We finally made the turn and were able to turn so the waves were behind us and off the Nuese River.
Once we were able to get turned in the same direction as the waves were rolling we could ride them in. After a while the land protected us from the winds and back to smooth seas. We traveled up the Pamlico River to our marina about a 20 miles up the river and we’re settled in at McCotters Marina.
Time to clean the salt off everything and get settled for the night. Then travel back to Elkhart.
